Carlos Carrasco told reporters after his nightmare outing on Tuesday night that a check swing call on Jose Altuve that led to a leadoff walk in the first inning changed the entire game completely, and was a catalyst to him allowing six runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Gio couldn't believe his ears.
"If I was Buck Showalter, I would go to Carlos Carrasco and rip him a new one after these excuses he's had over these last two starts," Gio said.
"Behind closed doors, I would say 'come into my office,' I'd shut the door and say 'what are you talking about?'"
Carrasco was bombed by Houston last week before leaving with back tightness, then got knocked around again on Tuesday night, but pointed to the Altuve check swing, which came on a full count, multiple times. But Altuve was erased on the next batter after a fielder's choice, then Carrasco allowed two straight singles and a three-run bomb by Kyle Tucker.
Gio wasn't having any of the veteran righty's excuses.
"The check swing call in the first inning changed the entire game?" Gio said. "You gotta be tougher than that. What are you, nuts?
"You blamed everything on the back and now you do this? We're not an excuse-making team. That's what I'd tell him. Actually, I wouldn't do it behind closed doors. I would do it in front of the whole team."
