Carlos Carrasco points to check swing call as catalyst for bad start: 'Changed the ballgame completely'

For the second time in one week, Carlos Carrasco was bombed by the Astros, this time allowing six runs over 4.1 innings of work to raise his season ERA to 4.85.

But Carrasco says his rough night was doomed from the very first batter of the game, thanks to home plate umpire Carlos Torres.

With Jose Altuve leading off the game, Carrasco thought he had a strikeout to get things started when Altuve tried to check his swing on a full count pitch, but Torres ruled that Altuve did not go around, putting a runner on first. Altuve was quickly retired at second on a fielder's choice, but two straight singles followed before a three-run blast by Kyle Tucker to make it a 4-0 game before New York had a chance to come to bat.

"For me, it was a little disappointing," Carrasco said. "But in the first inning, the umpire made the wrong call right there. It changed the ballgame completely…I think he screwed up right there on that call."

Carrasco seemed to settle down shortly after, tossing two straight scoreless innings before faltering again in the fourth and the fifth, but he seemed adamant that the Altuve at-bat changed the trajectory of his night.

"We are human beings," Carrasco said. "I tried not to think about that…it should have been a different game."
