Drew Smith was officially suspended 10 games after he was ejected from Tuesday night’s game following a sticky substance check from the umpires, and another Mets reliever was apparently closed to getting tossed by that same crew.
Mets closer David Robertson told Newsday that after his appearance on Tuesday night, the umpires told him that his hands were too sticky, though he was allowed to go clean them off rather than get the hook, and the suspension.
“He felt like my hands were sticky,” Robertson told Newsday’s Tim Healey. “And I told him that his hands felt sticky. I said, I have absolutely nothing on me. I’ve done nothing but grab the rosin bag.
“The fact that I was even told that was shocking.”
Robertson would have been the third Mets pitcher this season to be thrown out for sticky hands, and several Mets have sounded off on the ruling, including Smith on Tuesday and Max Scherzer earlier in the season. But Robertson was spared, and he helped the Mets to a win on Wednesday night.
