Dominic Smith capitalizing on 'the little opportunities I do get'

Dominic Smith can breathe easy after knowing he wasn't a victim of Monday's roster cuts, and it took him just over 24 hours to give the Mets assurance that they made the right decision by keeping him on the big-league squad.

Smith roped a two-run double in the first inning of the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Braves, giving Carlos Carrasco all the run support he would need in a 3-0 win to complete the twin bill sweep.

Smith, who had a four-hit night on Sunday just hours before the league deadline to trim rosters down to 26 players, has five RBI in his last two starts, capitalizing on his opportunities that may increase now that Robinson Cano has been let go.

"It's something I already knew I could do," Smith said. "I showed y'all in spring training. I showed the team. The little opportunities I do get I continue to put together good ABs in my opinion and hit the ball hard and well. If I'm able to do that, I'm going to force tough decisions, and I'm gonna help the team win ballgames."

Smith is still trying to improve upon his .651 OPS and show that he is still capable of performing like he did in the shortened 2020 campaign, and while he would like to have more of a regular role on the team, he is embracing the chances he gets on what it is a winning club.

"It's been fun," Smith said. "This team is a really good team, and I feel like that's the beauty of it. Everybody in this lineup can contribute on any given night and help the team win, and that's what makes a good ballclub."
