Buck Showalter on Dominic Smith: 'He's going to get an opportunity again…if not for us, somewhere else'

Dominic Smith was promptly optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after being activated from the 10-day IL earlier this week, and the writing is on the wall, that Smith may not get another chance with the Mets at the big-league level.

New York went out and addressed its platoon at the trade deadline by acquiring Daniel Vogelbach, Darin Ruf, and Tyler Naquin, leaving the slumping Smith as the odd man out. Even Buck Showalter hinted before Friday’s series opener against the Phillies that Smith’s time in New York could be done.

“It’s nice to have him here,” Showalter said. “He's going to get an opportunity again up here - if not for us, somewhere else. I hope it's for us, because we like Dom.”

Smith recently acknowledged himself that his time with the Mets could be over, but even if it is, Showalter wouldn’t be surprised if he quickly found a role with another big-league club.

“He understands the competitive nature of it, and he also understands where this game is gonna take him if he stays true,” Showalter said. “He has an ability to play up here and impact a team.”
