The team announced the news Friday morning, hours after New York was swept in four games by the Cubs, extending its losing streak to six games and falling a season-worst 13 games below .500. The Mets have allowed 54 runs over that losing skid.

Andy Green, formerly of the Mets front office, will take over as the interim manager for the rest of the season, per the team's announcement. Green managed the Padres from 2016-19 and amassed a record of 274-366.

Mendoza becomes the first Mets manager fired during the season since Willie Randolph was let go during the 2008 campaign. Mendoza leaves his first managerial job after posting a 206-199 career record.

Mendoza arrived from Aaron Boone's coaching staff and immediately led the Mets to their most memorable season in a decade, securing a playoff berth on the final day of the regular season before making a run to the NLCS. The hope was that the 2024 run was just a start of something greater, but 2025 turned out to be a disaster, with the team coughing up a big Wild Card lead to fall out of the playoffs entirely on the final day of the regular season, a massive failure given the team's payroll and the nature of the expanded playoff field.

This season has not been much better, as expectations/payroll compared to results has been dreadful, to say the least.

"Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis," David Stearns said in a press release. "Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward."

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment," owner Steve Cohen said. "He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best. Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered."
