Carlos Mendoza provided an update on Francisco Alvarez before Thursday's series finale against the Tigers, and the prognosis was not good.

The Mets catcher underwent surgery on Thursday morning to repair a torn meniscus, and Mendoza announced that Alvarez's recovery will likely be on the longer side of the typical recovery timeline. Mendoza estimates that Alvarez will be out for eight weeks.

Alvarez appeared to suffer the injury in Tuesday night's series opener, where he took a big swing and fouled a pitch back in the bottom of the sixth. Alvarez immediately showed signs of discomfort and was ultimately removed from the game.

Health continues to be a struggle for Alvarez, who was hitting .241 with four home runs and a .710 OPS this season. Various injuries have limited the former hyped prospect to just 213 games since the start of 2024. Alvarez played in an even 100 games in 2024, then appeared in just 76 games last season.
