The Mets have reportedly been given permission to speak to Craig Counsell about their managerial opening.

According to multiple reports, New York has been given the green light to talk to the Brewers manager, despite his contract still being active with Milwaukee until Tuesday. With that permission from the Brewers, David Stearns and company can now begin talks with Counsell immediately.

Counsell was seen as a clear candidate to replace Buck Showalter given his ties with Stearns, who just came over from Milwaukee’s front office.

According to multiple reports, Counsell would “welcome” the prospect of managing in New York, where he would be armed with the richest owner in baseball to bolster a roster that finished 2023 in disappointing fashion.

Counsell has been the Brewers manager since 2015, and has produced winning seasons in every full campaign since 2017. In 2023, Milwaukee finished 92-70 to win the NL Central, but lost to the Diamondbacks in the Wild Card Series.
