The Mets disastrous season has reached a point where they are now going viral for unthinkable misplays in the field.

On the first Blue Jays at-bat of Monday night's series opener in Toronto, George Springer floated a seemingly harmless leadoff single to left, but a charging Juan Soto misread the bounce off the turf, and the ball skipped past his outstretched glove and rolled all the way to the wall. A.J. Ewing charged over from center to try and pick up the ball on the warning track, but as he went to scoop up the ball, the ball flew out of his glove and rolled further along the warning track towards the left field foul pole.

Soto finally picked up the ball but didn't bother throwing it in, as Springer was already rounding third to score on an improbable little league home run.

The disastrous play to open the bottom of the first inning opened the door for the reeling Mets to criticism from all corners of social media, as fans declared the play a fitting summation of what is quickly becoming the most embarrassing season in franchise history.

New York went on to lose the game 2-1, putting the team back down to 15 games below .500, and trending towards a 90-loss team that came into the season with an astronomical payroll and expectations of contending in the National League. Instead, they are 15.5 games back of the NL East lead after dropping nine of their last 10 games.
