J.D. Davis pitched in college, has made two appearances on a big-league mound during his time with the Astros, and apparently wanted to make it a third while the Mets were blowing out the Nationals again on Tuesday night.

With New York up 10-0 in the top of the ninth, Buck Showalter turned to recent call-up Adonis Medina to close out the rout, but noticed Davis giving him a look that said he wanted his turn on the bump.

“When I went out there to look at Medina,” Showalter said with a smile. “I was getting longing eyes from J.D. about pitching.”

Davis has pitched 2.2 innings in the bigs, allowing two hits and one earned run (on a solo home run) while walking one and striking out four. He hasn’t pitched in four years, but he seems to want to get his turn at some point.

But Showalter said the goal is to never have a position player on the rubber.

“Our goal was to make it through the year without anybody having to pitch,” Showalter said. “But we’ll see.”
