Juan Soto carried the Mets to a much-needed win over the rival Braves on Wednesday night, belting two home runs to make it three in this series, as Soto continued his red-hot June.
Soto made some history with his latest multi-homer game, as it was the 27th time Soto hit more than one homer in a game since breaking into the majors, which is now the most multi-homer games by a player that young ever in MLB history.
Soto’s 27th multi-homer game passed Jimmie Foxx for the all-time record before 27 years old, topping a list that also includes legends like Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews, and Alex Rodriguez.
It wasn’t the most illustrious or headline-grabbing record, but Soto admitted after the game that he knew he was on the cusp of setting that record, which prompted the fiery response from Soto after his second homer left the park late in a game that was seemingly already secured.
“I knew what I was chasing in the at-bat,” Soto said. “So when I see the ball going I felt really emotional right there.”
Most importantly, Soto’s homer helped the Mets halt a painful skid that had seen them lose five straight games against the Braves, and now, they have a chance to salvage a series split in the finale on Thursday night.
