Mets, Kumar Rocker 'have an understanding' for deal with over-slot $6mm bonus: report

Seems like the Mets got their guy, and now have him under contract.

Barely 24 hours after the Mets selected Kumar Rocker No. 10 overall in the MLB Draft on Sunday night, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the team and the righty "have an understanding" on a deal with a $6 million signing bonus Post.

"There is an understanding among the participants about what he expects [financially] and what they expect," Scott Boras, Rocker's agent, is quoted as saying in Sherman's report.

Rocker was projected as a possible Top 5 pick at one point, perhaps even No. 1 overall, but his selection at No. 10 carries a slot bonus of $4.74 million. According to the Post, part of why Rocker dropped – in addition to the fact that her did not consent to be re-drafted by the Rockies, who selected him out of high school in the 38th round in 2018 – is because he was making strong demands of an overslot bonus.

Sherman's report also quotes Scott Boras as saying the Mets "have a strong flavor" for Rocker, and "it was about a war to get him down [to 10th] because we felt the Mets were a good pick for him and a good environment."

The Mets selected high school RHP Calvin Ziegler in the second round, a selection SNY's Joe DeMayo noted may have potential for an under-slot signing (that slot is worth $1.62 million), but the Mets would need to eat up roughly 75 percent of that bonus to accommodate Rocker.

The deadline to sign 2021 Draft picks is 5 p.m. on August 1.
