The Mets may have lost another key starting pitcher in as many nights on Tuesday, as Taijuan Walker had to leave his start against the Braves with back spasms after just two innings of work.
Walker, who holds an impressive 3.36 ERA and 3.66 FIP on the season, is hopeful that his back issue is nothing serious, but admits that it is not something he has dealt with before.
"Honestly, I'm not sure," Walker said when asked about his concern level. "Never had anything like this before. Training staff isn't too concerned about it, so I'll get an MRI [Wednesday] and see how I feel."
The Walker early exit comes just one night after Carlos Carrasco left his start with side tightness, later revealed to be a strain that will cost him 3-4 weeks. Walker could now be joining him on the IL pending Wednesday's MRI.
"Covered first, bent down, got the ball, touched the bag and stood up, and as I was walking back towards the dugout, I started getting tight," Walker explained. "Walked down, tried to bend over, and when I tried to come back up, it just locked up on me."
