Taijuan Walker was hopeful to make his next start on Sunday against the Phillies after leaving his last start with back spasms, but Buck Showalter ruled that out before Saturday's doubleheader.
The decision could wind up impacting the notable pitching probables for next week's Subway Series in the Bronx.
Showalter told reporters that Walker won't be going to the IL and will made a start next week, and if it is on Tuesday, which he didn't rule out, it would mean Jacob deGrom won't start on Tuesday against the Yankees.
"He will not start [Sunday], but he's doing really well," Showalter said of Walker. "He's got a couple other things to do to make sure it's not an issue. But we feel like he'll start shortly thereafter. It's not an IL injury.
"He's gonna be a pitcher for us sometime in the coming week. It won't be Wednesday. Everything's in play. I don't think Monday's in play, but everything from Tuesday on is in play. We'll see how he does [Sunday]…after Monday he's in play, we think. We hope."
With Walker not in play for Monday, Max Scherzer seems locked in to still start the Subway Series opener, but the Mets may not get to boast their dominant 1-2 punch against their crosstown foes.
