The Evan and Tiki crew revealed the first four players to be selected to the list of best New York sports draft picks of the last 50 years, and there was already a massive debate between Evan and Morash.
After it was revealed that Don Mattingly was 19th on the list, and David Wright 17th, Morash went off on the Yankee great coming in behind the former Mets star.
“What are we doing here? Now we know the list is fixed and you made it all,” Morash said to Evan. “When ‘David Baseball’ becomes a nickname, then you can do this.
“If you had, in their prime, a team in the World Series, and you could pick one guy to come up and pinch hit, is it gonna be David Wright or Don Mattingly?”
Evan noted the statistical categories that Wright had the advantage in over Mattingly, but Morash didn’t want to hear it, pointing to Mattingly’s peak years being far better than Wright’s, even if that peak was shorter than many Hall of Famers due to back issues.
“David Wright is the poster boy for a fanbase that never had anywhere close to what the Yankees had in a dynasty,” Morash said. “Therefore, he gets risen up by enormous pegs by Mets fans. The truth is, he has similar statistics - slightly better than Don Mattingly - Don Mattingly is absolutely the better baseball player that you’d rather have.
“Did David Wright ever shake a stadium the way Don Mattingly did with that home run against Seattle? David Wright is a good baseball player, but a product of Mets desperation.”
