Adam Gase didn't even make it to Black Monday, as his tenure as HC of NYJ officially ended just hours after the Jets' season finale.

Just after 9 p.m. Sunday, roughly five hours after the final whistle of the Jets’ season-ending loss to New England, the team released an official statement from owner Christopher Johnson that said, “This evening, I informed Adam Gase that he will no longer serve as head coach of the New York Jets.”

The dismissal ends weeks of speculation on the future of Gase, who finishes 9-23 as the head coach of the Jets after Sunday’s loss to the Patriots. Craig Carton of WFAN first reported on Tuesday that the decision had been finalized internally, and frequent FAN guest Ian Rapaport confirmed that on Saturday.

Sunday, it came to fruition, with Johnson’s statement also saying that while it is his “sincere intention to have stability in the organization, especially in the leadership positions, it is clear that the best decision for the Jets is to move in a different direction.”

Gase is 32-48 in five seasons as an NFL head coach in Miami and New York, with just one winning season: a 10-6 campaign in his rookie year with the Dolphins. He was 6-10 and 7-9 in his next two years in Miami before being fired at the end of the 2018 season; he was hired by the Jets less than a month later, and led them to a 7-9 record in 2019 before going 2-14 this year.

The move leaves the Jets in the market for their third head coach in four seasons, and Gase is the second straight Jets coach to be dismissed immediately after a season-ending loss to the Patriots in Foxboro, as the same fate befell Todd Bowles after the 2018 finale.
