What’s the saying … where there’s smirk, there’s fire? Sean McVay tipped his hand big time during Thursday’s media availability, setting a Guinness Record for the world’s worst poker face when asked if the Rams had been in contact with free agent Odell Beckham.
Kim Jones of NFL Network and WFAN made it official about an hour later, sharing that Beckham had confirmed the news via text.
Jones’ announcement quickly went viral, inspiring dozens of parody tweets with Beckham settling debates on everything from fast food to buffalo wings.
“Odell texted me” is a worthy successor to “a deep drive into left field by Castellanos,” a legendary meme that, even a year later, still gets laughs. By merely doing her job, Jones unwittingly became an internet phenomenon, birthing an online catchphrase that will no doubt end up on t-shirts and bumper stickers throughout Greater Los Angeles.

While it’s debatable how much impact Beckham, who has largely struggled in his return from ACL surgery, will truly have on Los Angeles, losing OBJ to the Rams has to hurt if you’re the Packers, especially considering Green Bay was reportedly his first choice. Much of Aaron Rodgers’ frustration with the Packers’ organization has been over the front office’s inability to provide him with an adequate supporting cast, surrounding him with mediocre talents like Allen Lazard and aging slot receiver Randall Cobb. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Packers were never “all in” on Beckham, and that indecision may have cost them a chance at keeping their franchise quarterback beyond this year.
It’s unclear why Beckham preferred the Rams over his hometown Saints (who recently lost Michael Thomas to a season-ending ankle injury), though New Orleans’ quarterback uncertainty may have been a factor.
