Yankees president Randy Levine joined Carton & Roberts on Wednesday to discuss the extension of WFAN’s partnership with the team to be the flagship audio home of the Yankees, one that extends for many, many years to come.
Of course, Craig and Evan had to ask him about two significant men whose contracts are up at the end of this season – Aaron Judge and GM Brian Cashman – and on the former, while he can’t spill too much of the team Levine made it seem that the Yankees want Judge in pinstripes forever.
“I only can tell you that Aaron Judge is a really special player. We love Aaron Judge, he is a Yankee through and through, and what happens in contract negotiations happens,” Levine said. “We made a strong effort and will continue to make an effort, because Aaron Judge belongs in pinstripes, and that’s the feeling of everyone in this organization.”
As for the GM, who is busy “working the phones hard” ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline?
“I’ll leave that to Hal (Steinbrenner), who said a few weeks ago he thinks Cash has done a great job,” Levine said. “He’s been here forever, and he’s done a great job this year, and we’ll leave those decisions to Hal. It’s obvious his feeling.”
Just remember, Levine said, that you can’t believe everything you read leading up to Tuesday.
“Right now Cash is on the phones seeing how he can improve the team, and I caution you guys and your viewers that there’s a lot of rumors out there and 99 percent aren’t true, but he’s working the phones really hard,” Levine said. “I don’t mind (the rumors) I think it’s great because it just increases people thinking about baseball and we’re in the news cycle 24/7. But Cash is working hard, and we have until Tuesday to see what happens.”
There may also be one more contract signed soon: apparently, Levine is part of a team working hard to secure a location and funding in Queens to build a 25,000-seat stadium for current Yankee Stadium tenant New York City FC.
“It’s not done yet, n agreement is signed, but it’s very positive,” Levine said. “The great Marty Edelman (NYCFC’s Vice Chairman) is leading the negotiating team, but Mayor Adams has been phenomenal. He’s been a breath of fresh air taking the lead, understanding how important it is for a privately-funded stadium.”
