The New York Rangers selected defenseman Braden Schneider with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, adding Schneider to countryman and No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere as their haul on Day 1.

The Rangers originally had the 22nd overall pick, but dealt that pick, as well as No. 72 overall in the third round, to Calgary to move up three spots and nab Schneider.

Schneider, 19, has spent the last four seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. This past season, the defenseman played in 60 games, scoring seven goals and notching 35 assists, with 41 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-2, 209-pound blueliner has also played for Team Canada in the U-18 World Championships in the past, and was part of the Canadian squad that won gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup – a tournament in which new teammate Lafreniere was the leading scorer.

The Rangers will have seven picks on Day 2 of the draft, including three seventh-rounders, but their next selection on the board is not until No. 92 overall, one before the final pick of the third round.
