A potential big blow for the Giants’ secondary: safety Dane Belton suffered a broken collarbone at Monday’s practice, which will sideline him for “a good amount of time.”

Belton, a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, was apparently making a strong impression in camp as part of three-safety sets in Wink Martindale’s new defensive scheme. Belton had played the “cash” position in Iowa’s defense in college, basically a hybrid strong safety/linebacker, and he was a First Team All-Big Ten selection as one of only seven Power 5 players to record at least five interceptions last season.

Per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, there is optimism Belton could be ready for the start of the season, but may be a bit behind due to the injury.

Julian Love and Xavier McKinney will be the starting safeties, but Belton’s injury thins out the depth a bit. The Giants recently added Andrew Adams, who could fill Belton’s role, but the rest of the current camp depth chart includes just two rookies, Yusuf Corker and Trenton Thompson.
