The Knicks need an impact point guard, and have needed one for years. Could Dennis Schroder be the team’s next attempt to solidify a starting backcourt?
According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, New York is expected to be among the most likely suitors for the unrestricted free agent.
Per Fischer, the Knicks and Bulls are expected to be prime landing spots for Schroder, who turned down a four-year, $84 million offer from the Lakers earlier this season. Los Angeles could explore a sign-and-trade option for Schroder, who appears to be seeking more money and a bigger role within an offense, but a team like the Knicks, who will have over $50 million in cap space, could sign Schroder without the need for a sign-and-trade.
The Knicks have also recently been linked to Collin Sexton, a point guard who moved over to shooting guard this season with the Cavaliers. Lonzo Ball, Chris Paul and Damian Lillard are other impact point guards who could draw interest from the Knicks, the latter being the biggest splash, but also the most costly, should he become available via trade.
Schroder made 61 starts for the Lakers last season after starting just two games the year before (though he still appeared in 65 games and averaged 30.8 minutes per game that season. He averaged 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per game, shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from downtown. In his 2019-20 campaign with the Thunder, the 27-year-old logged 18.9 points per game, the second-highest mark of his career.
