The Mets are clear buyers heading into toward the trade deadline, currently holding a four game lead in the NL East, and Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that Adam Frazier could be on the team’s wish list for potential upgrades.
According to Heyman, the Mets are one of the teams “in” on the All-Star Frazier, who will receive plenty of trade interest, as Frazier’s Pirates will almost certainly be sellers once again this month.
Frazier will be a starter in this year’s All-Star Game, as the 29-year-old leads the league in hits and is slashing .326/.396/.461 with a 135 OPS+ as Pittsburgh’s second baseman. He is arbitration eligible next season before becoming a free agent after the 2023 campaign.
The Mets have Jeff McNeil back from the IL to play second base, but he could also play the hot corner and open a spot for Frazier, which would leave J.D. Davis, who is still on the 60-day IL, as the odd man out. New York’s acting GM Zack Scott told reporters earlier this week that the Mets are anxious to get Davis and his .390 average back in the lineup (though he’s only played 14 games and none since May 1), but the team will continue to look for upgrades everywhere on the roster, including the infield.
“I think we can get production out of third base with some of the guys that we have, but always have to be open-minded to other opportunities to improve,” Scott told reporters on Monday afternoon. “I think we’re open to any type of addition to the roster that we think makes the team better. We’re gonna explore any opportunity to make the team better.”
