The Mets were denied permission to speak with Brewers team president David Stearns in New York’s search for a president of baseball operations, so Sandy Alderson has reportedly pivoted to another member of Milwaukee’s front office.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets have been in contact with Brewers general manager Matt Arnold, and may have made him an offer to come to New York to lead the team into its hopeful window of contention.

According to Puma, Arnold now appears to be the Mets’ “top candidate.” But SNY's Andy Martino reports that New York has "requested, but not received" permission to speak with Arnold, and that Arnold's contract terms may limit his ability to talk with other clubs about taking another job.
