Report: Mets have been in contact with Brewers GM Matt Arnold

The Mets were denied permission to speak with Brewers team president David Stearns in New York's search for a president of baseball operations, so Sandy Alderson has reportedly pivoted to another member of Milwaukee's front office.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets have been in contact with Brewers general manager Matt Arnold, and may have made him an offer to come to New York to lead the team into its hopeful window of contention.

According to Puma, Arnold now appears to be the Mets' "top candidate." But SNY's Andy Martino reports that New York has "requested, but not received" permission to speak with Arnold, and that Arnold's contract terms may limit his ability to talk with other clubs about taking another job.

Arnold has been with the Brewers since the end of the 2015 season, having previously been with the Rays before Stearns named him assistant general manager. His career in baseball operations also includes time with the Dodgers, Reds, and Rangers.

Arnold was promoted to general manager prior to the 2021 season. Milwaukee went on to win 95 games and the NL Central before a surprising early exit in the NLDS at the hands of the Braves.
