Rojas was relieved of his duties as Mets manager last month, the team declining to pick up his 2022 option after he went 103-119 over two seasons. He also reportedly interviewed for the Padres’ managerial opening before the Friars hired Bob Melvin away from Oakland.

The Yankees have four openings on their coaching staff, including both base coaches; third base coach Phil Nevin was one of three coaches (along with hitting coaches Marcus Thames and P.J. Pilittere) that did not have their contracts renewed, while first base coach Reggie Willits, whose contract is also up at the end of 2021, has decided to leave the organization to become a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma.

Willits was also the team’s baserunning coordinator and outfield coach.

Rojas, 40, is a member of baseball’s famed Alou family, the son of former MLB player and manager Felipe Alou. A baseball lifer, Rojas played 34 games for the GCL Expos in 2004 before shoulder issues ended his career, and he turned to coaching; he began that career with the Dominican Summer League Nationals in 2006 and then moved to the Mets in 2007, spending 12 seasons as a coach and manager in the minors before ascending to the major-league staff as a quality control coach in 2019.
