Rex Ryan 'top candidate' for Broncos defensive coordinator: Report

Rex Ryan could be nearing a return to the NFL for the first time in seven years.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former Jets head coach has “emerged as a top candidate” for the Broncos defensive coordinator job, after Ryan reportedly interviewed with new Denver head coach Sean Payton earlier this week.

Ryan led New York to two consecutive AFC title game appearances, then spent two seasons as the Bills head coach, compiling a record of 15-16 in that time. He hasn’t coached in the NFL since, spending his time as an analyst for ESPN.

The Jets boasted a fearsome defense under Ryan, highlighted by the prime of Darrelle Revis, arguably the best player in franchise history. He has been out of the coaching game for some time, but he may be getting another shot.
