Rhys Hoskins called out Jeff McNeil after Friday’s win over the Mets, telling reporters that the second baseman was “complaining” about his slide into second base, which caught McNeil in the right ankle.
“I’ve played in this ballpark a bunch,” Hosking said. “He just seems to be complaining when things aren't going well. I think that's kind of one of those moments. Maybe lost in the heat of the game a little bit.”
Benches and bullpens cleared in the eighth inning when Hoskins slid into McNeil, who stood over Hoskins and shouted, leading to Hoskins making a crying gesture to troll the Mets second baseman. McNeil told reporters after that Hoskins has a history of questionable slides, with Friday just being the latest.
“Just a late slide,” McNeil said. “We’ve had a little bit of a past, so I knew there would be a chance he’d be coming in like that…He's had some pretty questionable slides at second base, for sure.
“I’m actually really fortunate Baty didn’t really hit me in the chest. If he hits me in the chest there, that's one of the ugliest slides.”
