After hearing John Mara speak with reporters on Monday, Sal is worried that the Giants owner could be “meddling” too much with football decisions, and should take a step back in that regard.
“I feel like he’s an owner that has the right intentions. I think he means well, but the problem is he’s meddling,” Sal said. “Why is he even in team meetings?”
Mara openly talked about his disappointment with Saquon Barkley signing with the Eagles, even texting the running back to let him know he was “sick” over the lifelong Giant going to a hated rival. Sal is convinced the Barkley situation could have unfolded differently had it not been for Mara.
“While I know he’s trying to connect with the fanbase, the reality is, I believe he is the reason the Giants didn’t trade him last year at the trade deadline,” Sal said. “I feel like Mara is meddling too much with the Giants.”
Sal also didn’t need to hear Mara give Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll his “blessing” to draft a quarterback at sixth overall. He believes that should go without saying that the head coach and the GM, not the owner, should have the ability to make the decision for themselves.
“I care what the football people say…not what the owner says about Daniel Jones,” Sal said. “His presence is too large, looming over every decision, if not flat-out meddling in every decision the Giants are making. I think it’s hurting them.”
