Alex Rodriguez and his No. 13 became a topic of conversation around the station after the former Yankee told Evan and Tiki that he wasn’t happy to see the Yanks give his number to Joey Gallo in 2021, all but confirming that they wouldn’t be retiring his number.
Some believed Rodriguez’s number should be retired. BT was one of them, and Sal was surprised, to say the least.
“If they retired A-Rod’s number, it would be the biggest embarrassment ever,” Sal said, noting Rodriguez’s off-the-field troubles and 2009 being his lone postseason contribution. “Is [Hideki] Matsui’s number retired? I’d rather retire his number. When does it end?
“Did they retire [Jim] Leyritz’s 13? I guess not.”
BT countered with Rodriguez’s otherworldly numbers during that 2009 playoff run, not to mention his two MVPs and stellar third base that he played after switching to the hot corner for his 12 years in New York. But Sal will never be able to get past the character concerns and the feuds with his own organization during his time in the Bronx.
“He’s a freaking embarrassment. He’s not a real Yankee,” Sal said. “All the bad blood, all the awkwardness, all the lying...was he even that good?
“He’s totally tainted…he’s a cheat and a liar. He embarrassed himself. He slapped somebody’s hand trying to knock a ball out of his glove. Screaming on the basepaths at the Blue Jays to drop pop-ups. Do the Yankees have a bush league section of Monument Park? Put him in the bush league section.”
