This past Sunday was a busy day at UBS Arena.
Not only did the Islanders practice in the morning after their home opener the night before, but later in the day on Sunday, the Islanders hosted a very special event. As part of Girls Hockey Weekend, sponsored by Global Industrial, 400 girls ranging in age from 5 to 14 took part in multiple on-ice clinics for players of all skill levels from introductory “Try Hockey for Free” sessions all the way up to advanced training.

Former Islanders forward Aaron Asham, Olympian Erika Lawler and players from the Long Island University women’s hockey team took part in the event that is aimed to promote and grow girls’ and women’s hockey throughout Long Island. The Islanders have made a strong commitment to youth hockey with a specific focus on increasing opportunities for girls.
It was just last year when the Islanders announced a significant expansion of that initiative with an investment that more than doubled participating numbers to 1,100 ensuring that more girls and women are able to have access to both play and coach hockey throughout the region.
The next Islanders Women and Girls hockey event will be on January 4th. For more information, email amateurhockey@newyorkislanders.com.
