We might be seeing a Steph Curry vs. Sabrina Ionescu 3-point shootout in the near future.

Ionescu set a WNBA and NBA All-Star record this weekend with a score of 37 in the WNBA’s 3-point contest, better than Curry’s career-best of 31, the previous record also shared by Tyrese Haliburton.

On Monday, Curry appeared on ESPN and said he and Ionescu might have to settle who’s truly the best at the 3-point contest. Ionescu saw the video and tweeted back at Curry.

“I gotta go after Sabrina’s record,” Curry said. “Sabrina gave me something to shoot for now that she went crazy with the 37 points in their All-Star weekend. I guess we gotta settle that one, for sure – who’s the best 3-point competition shooter.”

Ionescu grew up in the East Bay in Walnut Creek, before leading Miramonte High School (Orinda) to the state title game in 2016. Steph has been a supporter since her college days at the University of Oregon, where she emerged as a nationwide star.

After her record-setting round on Friday evening, Curry gave Ionescu a shoutout via Twitter.

Ionescu’s New York Liberty are currently in first place in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference, so they might be making a deep playoff run. The WNBA Finals will end the final week of NBA preseason, but maybe there will be a window for Ionescu and Curry to face off in an event this fall.

The Bay Area makes sense as a venue, given both players deep ties to the region. The Warriors are PR-savvy and this would be a cool event to promote the sport, so let’s see if Steph and Sabrina can make this happen.
