Rutgers is reportedly working up yet another contract extension for beloved head coach Steve Pikiell.

According to NJ.com’s Brian Fonseca, Pikiell is set to earn an extension for the second time in less than a year, and the University’s Board of Governors is scheduled to meet on Thursday to “act on a contract amendment for basketball coach.” That meeting is set for 3 p.m.

Pikiell is already signed through 2030, but another extension would take the 55-year-old well into his 60s, and potentially into retirement.

The program’s commitment to Pikiell, and the school’s continuous efforts to make sure Pikiell stays in Piscataway, is for good reason. Pikiell has helped lift the program out of the Big Ten cellar and has turned it into a consistent competitor in the conference, and now, a consistent NCAA Tournament team. Barring a collapse this season, the Scarlet Knights will be dancing for the third straight season, something that has never been done before in the program’s history.

Pikiell has also had a tremendous impact on the recruiting front, as he is just one month removed from securing a commitment from the highest-ranked recruit in Rutgers men’s basketball history in five-star forward Ace Bailey, a Georgia native.

Should Pikiell continue on this trend, and coach through the end of his next contract extension, a statue outside Jersey Mike’s Arena would likely be found at the conclusion of his new deal.
