With the trade of Justin Verlander, the Mets have fully punted on the 2023 season, trading their two aces at the start of the season, their veteran left fielder, and their best reliever all in a matter of days.
With the smoke clearing on New York’s fire sale, Tiki says the 2023 Mets have to be in the conversation, and likely at the top, of the list of biggest disappointments in baseball history.
“How can you not chalk this up as maybe the biggest failure in the history of Major League Baseball?” Tiki asked Evan. “Seriously, $347 million.
“Of course it’s a failure! You knew this was a failure a month ago, because you knew they weren’t going to accomplish what they set out to do, with $347 million. That’s not even including the luxury tax money. It’s almost half a billion dollars that they spent on this season.”
The Mets, fresh off a 101-win season in 2022, entered the year with the highest payroll in baseball history after extending several key players and adding the reigning AL Cy Young winner in Verlander, only to become sellers by the deadline. Simply put, Tiki says this will sting for Mets fans for quite a while.
“You’re gonna feel terrible until baseball starts anew next year,” Tiki said.
