Tim Locastro’s first season with the Yankees is over, as the outfielder suffered a torn right ACL in Saturday’s shortened 3-1 win over Boston.

Locastro made a leaping catch of Alex Verdugo’s fly ball against the side wall in left field in the first inning, and got up and immediately threw the ball in, preventing Enrique Hernandez, who tagged up from second on the play, from scooting home.

Trainers came to visit Locastro as he stayed hobbled around after the throw, but he stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning.

However, when the Yankees came out defensively for the second inning, Greg Allen shifted from right field to left to take over for Locastro, with Tyler Wade entering the game in right field. The team initially called Locastro’s exit right knee soreness, and manager Aaron Boone confirmed after the game that an MRI taken at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital revealed the tear.

“I feel for him,” said DJ LeMahieu, who played third base Saturday and was the closest Yankee to Locastro when he made the catch. “It was a heck of a catch. Got up and still threw it, saved a run. Stayed in the game.
He’s a beast. Obviously, disappointed. I hear he’s hurting, but it seems like he’s in good spirit. But, yeah, great catch.”

The Yankees are already thin in the outfield, with Aaron Judge on the COVID IL, and both Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier on the 10-day injured list. The team has already called up Trey Amburgey and Greg Allen to fill roster spots, so the top options in Triple-A to replace Locastro would be Estevan Florial, who is already on the 40-man roster, or Ryan LaMarre, who isn’t but was up earlier in the season.

“We’ll talk about that and about which way we want to go here in the short-term. We’ll have that conversation right now,” Boone said.
