Tim Tebow 'grateful for the journey' of his Mets minor-league tenure

Tim Tebow joined Carton & Roberts on Tuesday in the midst of a media tour for his new book and a whirlwind of quarterback activity in the NFL – but as you might expect, Evan just had to ask the former Heisman Trophy winner about his time as a Mets minor-league outfielder.

“I loved it. Not necessarily the bus rides, but I loved the journey, the highs and lows and ups and downs…just competing every night, the battle of it,” Tebow said. “Honestly, it’s something I’m so grateful I did, and is part of my journey. It was fun.”

As Tebow noted, baseball was his favorite sport “when it was baseball season,” but he had a message for those who wondered why he would give up a career as an NFL quarterback to try to make it through the grueling ranks of minor-league baseball.

“I know a lot of people couldn’t grasp why I did it – I don’t want to live my life based on what others want me to do, I want to go after what I’m passionate about, and I was thankful I got to do that,” he said.

And of course, he never had any doubts he had a chance to make it to the Majors, a notion Craig punctuated by saying, “you better, or you don’t belong on that bus.”

“You always want to believe in yourself as a competitor and an athlete, but there was a big part of me that didn’t set my mind on the destination; it was about the everyday journey,” Tebow said. “I’m grateful for a lot of the experience, because I didn’t want to be someone about just where I’m going – it’s about living every day with purpose and passion. That’s why I went and gave up a lot of things I could’ve done to go ride on minor-league buses, because it was worth it to me to go choose things that I love and are passionate about.”

That said, it seems as if the passion for pro sports may be dying down, because this was Tebow’s answer when Evan asked him if his career(s) were in the rear view:

“I don’t know if you want to say definitely, but probably.”
