Didi Gregorius was released by the Phillies on Wednesday, and it didn’t take long for Yankee fans to make it known that they wanted the former successor to Derek Jeter back in pinstripes.
Gregorius, who is hitting a lowly .181 with a .234 on-base percentage since returning from the IL on Aug. 5, will cost Philadelphia roughly $5 million to dump the struggling shortstop, who hit just .230 in two-plus seasons with the Phillies. But with the Yankees, the 32-year-old blossomed into a consistent lefty bat who peaked with an .829 OPS in 2018, hitting 27 home runs, the third straight season he hit at least 20 in New York.
But since then, Gregorius has been one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball, has battled injury, and hasn’t put up the production near what he accomplished in his prime in New York.
Still, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa not offering much offensively, Yankee fans were quick to note that his former team should take a chance on him.
