The Yankees announced on Thursday that they have added RHPs Jhony Brito and Jimmy Cordero and LHP Matt Krook to the 40-man roster ahead of next week’s Rule 5 protection deadline.
Also, outfielder Tim Locastro elected free agency in lieu of an outright assignment to Triple-A.
Brito, 24, split 2022 season between Double-A Somerset (8GS) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (18G/15GS), combining to go 11-4 with a 2.96 ERA in 112 2/3 innings pitched over 26 games/23 starts. Per the Yankees, he was second in wins, fifth in starts and sixth in innings pitched among Baby Bombers, and was named by Baseball America as having the “Best Control” among Yankees farmhands.
Cordero, 31, was signed to a minor-league deal last winter and went 1-1 with six saves and a 2.09 ERA in 38 2/3 Triple-A innings, striking out 50. Cordero has a 4.55 career ERA in 83 MLB innings with the Nationals, Blue Jays, and White Sox from 2018-20.
Krook, 28, went 10-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 29 games/22 starts at Triple-A, striking out 155 in 138 2/3 IP. He was second in Ks and IP, third in wins, and tied for sixth in starts among Baby Bombers, and his 155 strikeouts were second in Triple-A last season.
The lefty was originally a selection in the Triple-A phase of the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, and has, in two seasons, worked his way up to the 40-man roster.
Locastro, 30, played in 38 games with the Yankees last season, hitting .186 with two home runs, four RBI, and eight stolen bases in 46 plate appearances, getting most of his action as a pinch-runner and/or late-game defensive replacement. Over parts of six MLB seasons with Arizona, the Dodgers, and the Yankees, he is a career .227 hitter.
With the moves, the Yankees now have 37 players on the 40-man roster.
