The Yankees are reportedly making what would be their most anticipated call-up of the season, as Jack Curry of the YES Network reports that George Lombard Jr. is being promoted to the majors.
The Yankees top prospect has been a name fans have been clamoring for since the start of the season, especially with the offensive struggles at the shortstop position, with the likes of Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero underperforming for much of the year. Lombard, 21, is hitting .268 with an .845 OPS at Triple-A this season.
MLB Pipeline's 20th overall prospect will likely get plenty of run at shortstop, especially given Monday night's news that the Yanks have sent down Anthony Volpe to the minors, along with Jasson Dominguez and Angel Chivilli.
Lombard has been swinging the bat well since returning from injury, and the Yankees desperately need a spark in the lineup. The Yankees will hope Lombard can become what Volpe has not been since making his debut in 2023. Like Volpe, Brian Cashman has protected Lombard from trades as he made his ascent through the minor leagues, and now, he will get his first shot in the bigs.
Keeping Lombard in the minors for just 12 more days would have meant keeping him under team control for another year, perhaps suggesting the Yankees' urgency as their lead for the top Wild Card spot has shrunk to two games.
