The Yankees have announced their corresponding move for the Elmer Rodriguez call-up.
The team revealed Wednesday that utility man Randal Grichuk was designated for assignment, making room on the roster for Rodriguez, the organization's top pitching prospect who will make his first career start in Wednesday's series finale against the Rangers.
Grichuk, 34, was signed to a minor-league deal before the start of the season, seen as a platoon option to hit against left-handed pitching. In 33 plate appearances this season, he hit just .192 and struck out 10 times.
The Grichuk decision could also mean good news for Jasson Dominguez, who was called up earlier this week. With Grichuk DFA'd and Giancarlo Stanton on the IL with a right calf strain, Dominguez could get plenty of run as a DH or fourth outfielder until Stanton returns.
The Yanks now have five days to trade Grichuk, place him on waivers, or release him.
The Grichuk DFA was a corresponding move for Elmer Rodriguez's promotion.
