The Yankees mainly stood pat at the trade deadline, settling only for a pair of relievers, one from the White Sox in Kenyan Middleton and another from the Rangers in Spencer Howard, the latter being assigned to Triple-A.

The lack of moves left a clear need in left field, which has been sorely lacking in production and defensive stability since the end of last season, leaving many fans frustrated that such a hole in the roster was left unattended.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Brian Cashman tried to make a play for Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson, but found St. Louis’ asking price to be too high.

Per Heyman, Cashman offered prospects for Carlson, a below average hitter and a solid defender, but the Cardinals wanted “controllable starting pitching.”

So, Cashman didn’t pull the trigger, nor did he call on the availability of Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez.
