Aaron Boone told reporters on Wednesday that Frankie Montas underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday, and it went ask expected.

Boone added, per The Athletic, that Montas will not be able to throw for 12 weeks, and a return this season is still on the table.

Montas dealt with shoulder issues before he was traded to the Yankees, and those lingered through a disastrous debut with New York. He pitched to a 6.35 ERA in eight starts, was sidelined with shoulder troubles, and eventually came out of the bullpen in the ALCS to little success. He was expected to be the fifth starter in a loaded Yankee rotation, but that will now be taken up by Domingo German or Clarke Schmidt.

If Montas doesn’t throw for another three months, he would be tossing by the middle of May, though would still need time to increase throwing distances on flat ground, then graduate to throwing off a mound, then face live hitters before going on a rehab assignment, where he would likely need at least three or four starts. Still, that timeline wouldn’t rule him out for a return late in the regular season.

Montas is a free agent after this season.
