Aaron Boone provided updates on several injured Yankees before Tuesday’s win against the Red Sox, including Luis Severino, who could start a rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday.
Severino, who was placed on the 60-day IL with a lat injury that the righty strongly disagreed with, could be used in a relief capacity upon his initial return to the team after making a few rehab starts, which Boone said will begin with two innings and roughly 35 pitches.
“He'll probably get three [rehab starts] I would think,” Boone said. “But we'll see.”
Harrison Bader, acquired for the red-hot Jordan Montgomery before the trade deadline, began hitting off a tee and, per Boone, is on a “10-day ramp up” before beginning a rehab assignment to continue his road back from plantar fasciitis.
Nestor Cortes will throw a bullpen on Wednesday before the Yankees’ series finale against the Angels, and Boone is hopeful that the righty, and the team’s most consistent starter, will be back when the Yankees return home from Tampa after this weekend.
Reliever Scott Effross will begin a throwing program imminently, per Boone, and once he does, Boone estimates that it will be another 10 days before he’s ready to return to a depleted bullpen.
Speaking of bullpen help, Zack Britton’s rehab assignment was halted by a glute injury, but he will throw a bullpen on Thursday and could return to his rehab assignment this weekend if there are no issues.
