The Yankees, with a clear need for an upgrade in left field, reportedly still have consistent interest in a potential Bryan Reynolds trade, but the Pirates aren’t making things easy.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Pittsburgh has presented “unrealistic asks” for the 2021 All-Star, who has reportedly requested a trade from the Pirates this offseason. Pittsburgh wants to hang on to Reynolds, but their reported contract extension offer of six years and $75 million was roughly $50 million less than what Reynolds’ camp asked for.
Reynolds isn’t a free agent until 2026, and has hit 51 home runs over the last two seasons.
The Yanks have plenty of recent trade history with the Pirates, acquiring Jameson Taillon and Clay Holmes, but Reynolds has far more value than either of those arms at the time of those trades. Reynolds is a proven offensive force with years of team control remaining, and the rebuilding Pirates will want a hefty package in return.
Some reports have said that Pittsburgh wants a top pitching prospect to headline a return, which could complicate things for the Yankees, as their best prospects in the higher levels of the minor leagues are position players.
