Josh Donaldson doesn’t want to be written off just yet.

Despite being moved to the 60-day IL two weeks ago with a calf strain, the previously struggling veteran was seen fielding grounders and taking batting practice at what looked like full strength before Monday’s series opener against the Rays.

Donaldson told reporters on Monday that he hopes he can return this season, after initially expressing uncertainty if he would ever play again.

“As a competitor you want to be out there and helping your team as often as you can,” Donaldson said. “I don’t make those decisions, but I feel good about where I’m at right now.”

Donaldson also added that he didn’t have a say in being put on the 60-day IL, revealing that he “was just told” that he was being shelved long-term.

Donaldson has battled injuries for much of the season, and struggled when he hasn’t, posting a .659 OPS after a rough debut season in pinstripes last year.
