Josh Donaldson told reporters prior to Monday’s loss to the Angels that the calf injury he suffered on Saturday against the Rockies is a grade 2 or grade 3 strain that could end his season.
Donaldson came up lame running out a ground ball, and was placed on the 10-day IL on Sunday. Oswald Peraza was called up in his place.
There is currently no timetable for a return.
The veteran Donaldson has struggled badly in his Yankee tenure, hitting .142 this season, and that tenure could very well be over. Donaldson’s contract expires after this season, and the 37-year-old hasn’t ruled out retirement.
Donaldson arrived in a trade with the Twins that also brought over Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt, the latter having little impact with the Yanks due to injuries of his own. Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela were sent to Minnesota in return.
