David Ortiz was a crucial acquisition for the Red Sox to end their 86-year title drought in 2004, and Big Papi became a legend in Boston after winning a total of three World Series championships in Boston during his Hall of Fame career.
Asked what the Mets need to do to end their own title drought, which dates back to 1986, Ortiz told Inside the Mets that Steve Cohen and company should aggressively pursue Aaron Judge.
“I think the Mets should approach [Judge]," Ortiz said. "If I'm the Mets, I would give him $50 million for the next 5-6 years…[Judge] would be perfect for the Mets because he'd be hitting second in that lineup, and he can play all three outfield spots.”
The AAV would certainly be a hard bargain, but Judge turned down more years from the Yankees, and is reportedly seeking a more long-term deal that could take him through the end of his career.
But Ortiz would be reluctant to do that, as Judge is already 30 and has multiple seasons already riddled with injuries, though his last two years have been mainly injury free.
“He should be the highest paid player in the game,” Ortiz said. “But I would not give him a 10-year deal because of his injury history.”
