The Yankees desperately need an upgrade in the middle of their order, and according to SNY’s Andy Martino, they have had preliminary discussions about one of the best in the game.

Per Martino, the Yanks and Padres have had “one preliminary conversation” about Juan Soto, who would be available via trade for the “right” deal. Soto, under contract through next season, would require a big haul, but would represent an ideal fit for the Bombers, as his lefty swing in Yankee Stadium would be perfectly suited for the short porch in right field.

Soto is also just 25 years old and in the prime of his career. Even with a slow start last season, Soto finished with a .930 OPS and 35 home runs, while leading the league in walks for the third time in his career.

The three-time All-Star would represent the Yankees’ biggest trade splash since acquiring Giancarlo Stanton after the 2017 season, when Stanton was coming off an MVP season with the Marlins.
