Scott Effross is indeed headed to the injured list due to a right shoulder strain, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Monday, and the Yankees will recall RHP Clarke Schmidt to replace him on the roster.
Effross threw 16 pitches in Saturday’s loss to Toronto, but reported some shoulder stiffness after the outing and was unavailable on Sunday, when Lou Trivino threw the final 2 1/3 innings.
“It’s a small strain,” Boone said. “He won’t throw for a week to 10 days or so, and hopefully we’ll get him back in a few weeks.”
Missing Effross is a huge blow to the Yankees’ bullpen that is also without Clay Holmes and Albert Abreu. Trivino, Ron Marinaccio, Aroldis Chapman, and Jonathan Loaisiga will now likely be mixed and matched at the back end, with Schmidt, Wandy Peralta, Lucas Luetge, and recently-acquired Luke Bard, making up the rest of the relief corps.
The Yankees did get some good news on Holmes, who threw a 15-pitch bullpen Sunday and reported feeling good physically. He will throw another bullpen likely Tuesday, per YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits, and Boone is hopeful Holmes will be able to return by next Monday when the Yankees head to Anaheim for three games with the Angels.
That would be huge, as the loss of Effross is a double whammy for the Yankees’ pitching depth; Schmidt was being stretched out as a starter after his last re-assignment to Triple-A, but coming back up to help the bullpen means the Yankees’ only healthy arms on the 40-man that aren’t in the Bronx are also starters in Deivi Garcia (currently in Double-A after missing a good chunk of the season injured) and Yoendrys Gomez, who is currently in High-A and has thrown just 26 2/3 innings this year.
