With Opening Day quickly approaching, the Yankees are getting set to make some potentially tough decisions in terms of their roster, particularly when it comes to their infielders.
Top prospect Anthony Volpe has shined this spring, entering Friday with a .939 OPS before hitting another home run, and while Oswald Peraza has struggled this spring, he showed plenty of promise in his short stint in the majors last season, batting over .300.
The Yanks have hung on to both prospects and declined to pursue established star shortstops in free agency because of the promise they carry, and prominent MLB insider Ken Rosenthal says it’s time for the Yankees to play the kids, and to do that, Gleyber Torres should be traded.
“As good a player as Gleyber is, I kind of think the Yankees need to do that and play both these kids up the middle,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory.
“It’s a risk, but you also have DJ [LeMahieu]…they need an injection of this kind of youthful energy.”
Torres was once a top prospect and promising youngster, but he has never been able to replicate his All-Star seasons from 2018 and 2019, and has been in the middle of trade rumors since last year. Rosenthal says the time is now to finally swing a trade and open up the middle of the infield for the next Bombers youth movement.
“Even though it’s a risk to play two guys like that fairly regularly, they’re both highly thought of,” Rosenthal said. “You trade Torres for pitching, and that would kind of be the thing to. Those trades are tough to make, they’ve tried to trade Torres and haven’t been able to do it. But that is the obvious answer."
