The Yankees completed their worst series of the season by suffering their worst loss in the season, bringing the "June Swoon" headlines back in full force.
After rallying to tie the game in the ninth inning against Aroldis Chapman, Fernando Cruz blew a two-run lead in the 10th as the last-place Red Sox walked it off to complete a four-game sweep, sending the Yankees one game back of the Rays in the AL East.
The Yankee offense was once again nowhere to be found for most of Sunday's series finale, as they were shut down by Sonny Gray and held without a run through the first eight innings. It was the first time in 63 years that a Yankee team was held hitless through the first four innings in three straight games, as the absence of Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham are becoming glaring, especially with Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger struggling at the worst possible time. The Yankees did not record a hit on Sunday until Amed Rosario grounded a hard single up the middle with one out in the eighth.
The defense hasn't been much better. After committing four errors in the series opener, the Yanks were burned by another error on Sunday, as an Oswaldo Cabrera error in the fourth led to two runs for Boston. At a time where everything seems to be going wrong for the Yankees, it got even worse when Jazz Chisholm struck out for the final out in the top of the sixth, and was ejected after throwing his helmet while arguing the check swing call. He was not in the clubhouse when reporters arrived after the game, the second time this season that has occurred.
The Yanks are now .500 in the month of June and have been abysmal at Fenway Park in recent years. The "June Swoon" narrative is in full effect in what currently feels like the low point of the season.
