Yankees emerging as 'serious contenders' for Andrew Benintendi: Report

The trade deadline is approaching, and after another futile effort by the Yankee offense against the Astros, the front office is reportedly in strong pursuit of an outfield upgrade.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yanks “have emerged as serious contenders” for Royals left fielder Andrew Benintendi, who will almost certainly be dealt before the deadline given Kansas City’s spot in the standings.

It had previously been reported that the Yankees may back off their pursuit of Benintendi due to his vaccination status (he would be placed on the restricted list for the six remaining regular season games and any potential playoff games in Toronto), but with a clear need for more offense out of the left field spot, the Bombers may be willing to sacrifice those games if it means having Benintendi for the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .319 on the season and earned his first ever All-Star selection, though he leaves much to be desired in the power department. He has only three home runs on the season with a .402 slugging percentage, though the Yankees may believe those numbers would go up with his lefty swing at Yankee Stadium.
